The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (FMHUD) has issued a red alert over federal government properties in Imo State that are being illegally appropriated and sold by suspected land grabbers, reportedly also, in connivance with certain state officials.

This warning is a serious reminder to property investors, developers, and everyday Nigerians to verify land status before purchasing especially when dealing with government-owned land.

 The Ministry Warns That You Buy Any of These Properties At Your Own Risks:

  • Mopol Base, Onitsha Road, Owerri;
  • Shagari Low Cost Estate, Ezioha, Mbaitolu/Ikeduru LGA;
  • Shell Camp Quarters, Owerri;
  • NIPOST Office, Umuguma, Owerri West;
  • National Root Crops Institute,  Mgbirichi, Ohaji/Egbema LGA.

These lands are federal government properties and also, are not available for sale. According to sources, some of these illegal sales are facilitated through forged documents and misrepresented as legitimate allocations from the Imo State Government.

Why You Should Be Concerned:

Many unsuspecting buyers trust land deals because they appear to come from “official” channels. But as our legal expert, Madueke Enwere a property lawyer, a senior Police Officer and founder of EncumberedProperties.com  explains, land use in Nigeria is governed by the Land Use Act, 1978 and only proper federal channels can lawfully allocate federal properties. However, the said properties are NOT FOR SALE!

In fact, there is a case where a property was fraudulently allocated to a major transporter, Ekene Dili Chukwu Motors leading to legal battles and withdrawal of claims after investigations proved the land belonged to a federal government agency.

What To Do

  1. Stay away from any dealings involving the above-listed locations.
  2. Do not patronize individuals or officials claiming to sell government land in these areas.
  3. Always verify property status at www.encumberedproperties.com  before committing your money.
  4. Share this information with friends, family, and anyone looking to buy property in Imo State or elsewhere.

“Prevention is better than cure. Don’t wait to be scammed before doing your due diligence.”
