‎The Idu refuse dump site, located in the Gousa District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has become more than just a dumping ground — it is now a ticking environmental and public health time bomb.

What was once a distant, barely noticed site is now surrounded by rapidly expanding residential estates and industrial developments. The result is a growing crisis that affects not only the health of thousands of residents but also the financial security of property investors and homeowners in the area.

THE GROWING DANGER AROUND IDU

‎For years, the Idu dump served as the final destination for municipal waste from across Abuja. Poor waste management practices — including open burning and uncontrolled dumping — went largely unchecked.

However, with new estates like Broadview Estate, Police Service Commission Estate, and Navy Estate now within a seven-kilometer radius, the effects of this mismanagement are becoming impossible to ignore.

‎Every dry season, scavengers ignite fires at the site in search of valuable materials. The thick black smoke that follows contains particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, dioxins, and heavy metals — all of which have been scientifically linked to asthma, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

‎Residents within this zone, many relying on untreated self-help boreholes, are at serious risk of groundwater contamination from the dump site’s leachate — a toxic liquid that seeps into underground water sources.

‎WHEN INVESTMENT TURNS INTO REGRET

‎Beyond the health implications, this environmental crisis has created a major real estate nightmare. Many property owners who invested heavily in Idu and its surroundings are now facing declining property values and falling rental yields. Tenants who initially moved into these estates are relocating due to unbearable air quality and persistent pollution.

‎What was once a promising corridor for urban expansion has become a high-risk real estate zone — an example of how environmental hazards can quickly turn sound investments into financial traps.

‎A CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION

‎We call on the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to act urgently.

‎It is time to replace the current open dumping and burning system with modern waste management solutions such as:

  • ‎Proper landfill engineering
  • ‎Waste sorting and recycling
  • ‎Environmental monitoring and remediation

Failure to act will deepen this crisis — putting more lives, properties, and investments at risk.
